Moxibustion
Moxibustion (Moxa 쑥뜸) is a hyper thermal treatment method applying a burning herb in various ways to the proper points or large surface on the body. As a main remedy, moxibustion can be used alone or in combination with acupuncture. Bian Que of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) is a well known doctor in China, he mentioned about the treatment method following the depth of pathogenic factors in body. - "first acupuncture, second moxibustion, third herbal formula" which has been differently translated the deeper meaning depending on their ideas and theories. In introduction to Medicine (1575) Chinese doctor said "whenever a disease is not in time to be treated by herbs, or the effects of acupuncture are ineffective, then moxibustion must be used". It can support the famous Japanese medicinal quote about Moxibustion,"Moxa can treat anything difficult to cure"
This methods involves the burning of Moxa (Mugwort). The heat of the cauterization, as well as the properties of the moxa itself, serve to warm the qi and blood in the channels, expel cold and dampness, restore Yang, and in general help to regulate the organs and restore health.And it is very commonly used for gynecology problem, digestive and immune deficiency disorders. Mugwort has insecticidal, diuretic and hemostatic properties. It has been widely used as a home remedy in various countries in Asia, specially Korea and Japan.
Even though many studies and experiences show the effectiveness and safety of Moxibustion in Traditional Oriental Medicine, few studies have tested of moxibustion in treatment of any health condition. Some of the evidence related to moxibustion are below:
Moxibustion and Hot Flashes: The research showed that 14 sessions of moxibustion reduced the frequency and severity of hot flashes of 51 postmenopausal woman in 2009.
Moxibustion and Ulcerative Colitis: The one writer analyzed five clinical trials and determined that moxibustion had some benefits for people with ulcerative colitis in recent researches.
Moxibustion and Breech Birth: In 2005, scientists found insufficient evidence to support the use of moxibustion in correcting a breech presentation. Experienced TCM doctors recommend this treatment can choose before 37 weeks for pregnancy for better results.
Mugwort
Mugwort's origins are from Eastern Europe and Western Asia but it is now found in many parts of the world and can be considered a common weed. While mugwort is the common name for the plant Artemisia vulgaris, there are many species of Artemisia being used in different countries and locations. Artemisia Princeps, Artemisia Montana, and Artemisia Iwayomogi are frequently used a good quality moxibution floss in Japan and 사자발쑥 (unspecified yet: shapes like lion's dorsum of foot) is widely known the strong medicinal herb and cultivated in Korea.
